National park Brijuni (Brioni) is located on west side of Istrian peninsula. Islands are located around 7 km far from Pula where you can come by car, bus, plane, train. National park Brijuni is connected with town Fazana on mainland by often boat lines (15 minutes of ride).
Brijuni islands are consisted of 14 islands. Total surface of all islands is 33,9 km2.
Largest islands are Veliki Brijun (Large Bron) and Mali Brijun (Small Brion). Other islands are: St. Marko, Galija, Grunj, Okrugljak, Vrsar, Madona, Vanga, Kozada, Gaz, Supinic, Supin and St. Jerolim.
Veliki Brijun's surface is 5,72 km2. Coastline is 23,42 km long. Veliki Brijun had been populated since prehistory. After 177. BC it was under the rule of Romans. In 1893. on Veliki Brijun was built hotel, hippodrome, golf terrain and tennis terrain.
Mali Brijun's surface is 1,07 km2. Coastline is 8,105 km long. Canal between Veliki and Mali Brijun is called Tisnac. In 19th century Austria built a fort called Fort Brioni Minor as main navy port.
First inhabitants on Brijuni islands were directed to livestock breeding, fishing, hunting and agriculture. In 1st century BC on islands came Illyrian tribe Histri. After Illyrians came Romans and later Byzantines.
On Brijuni islands were kept many important meetings. Most known meeting is arranged by first Croatian president dr. Franjo Tudman on 31th July 1995. He organized military-police action called Oluja (Storm) which brought peace to Croatia after Homeland war.
Islands Brijuni have many historical monuments:
- Roman castle from 1st or 2nd century
- Temple of Venus
- Byzantine castrum
- Basilica of St. Mary from 5th century
- Church of St. German from 15th century
On 27th of October Brijuni islands were declared as national park.
National park Brijuni is also famous for paleontological findings of dinosaur traces. Over 200 footprints have been found on island Veliki Brijun and many other locations.
On Brijuni islands accommodation is offered in villas with private rooms and apartments and in hotels.
Gastronomy on Brijuni islands is very rich and famous. There are restaurants which offer many delicious specialties famous for this area.

Most important vegetation on islands Brijuni are maquis, parks, oak and laurel forests, sawmills cultures, holm oak forests, lawns... Old Olive Tree is one of the oldest olive trees in Mediterranean, around 1600 years old.
Animal life on Brijuni islands: rabbit, deer, mouflon, birds species, mallards, insects, mosquitoes, fish, gadwall, herons...
On north side of island Veliki Brijuni was founded safari park in 1978. Exotic herbivores: Indian elephant Lanka, llama, zebras, Indian holy cows, ostriches... Indian elephant was a gift from India in 1974. It is 3 m high and has 4-5 t weight. It eats around 80 kg of food each day. Zebras were a gift from India (1959.) and Guinea (1960. and 1961.). Llamas are South American camels without hump.
Ethno park is part of safari park with autochthonous species like Istrian cattle Boskarin, Istrian sheep, goats and donkeys.
In a bay on south side of island Veliki Brijun is bird reserve Saline. It has three lakes. Saline was built on remains of old saltwork. It is consisted of Mediterranean maquis and wetland plants.
National park Brijuni is home of sea turtle Rospo. It came from Center for sea turtle recovery. It has unjured eyes.
Parrot Koki is a legend on Brijuni islands. It used to be Tito's parrot. It can live for 100 years and it is very intelligent bird. Koki was a gift from Josip Broz Tito to his granddaughter for 9th birthday. Today it is 52 years old, it talks and sometimes can shake hands.
Brijuni islands are ideal for diving. It has many protected sea species: periska, prstac, turtles, dolphins...
Brijuni islands are very famous among sailors, especially bay of St. Nicholas on island Mali Brijun. Guests who come by their own boat have to check in to hotel reception. You should not bring bikes or vehicles on island.
You can also organize wedding on Brijuni islands. Brijuni can organize dinners in restaurants, boat rides, wedding in church of St. German, ride with Tito's Cadillac, hotel or villa accommodation and much more.
