Kornati islands are located in region of North Dalmatia. Kornati islands include around 150 islands, islets and cliffs on area of 320 km2. There are no permanent settlements on Kornati islands. Kornati islands are located 15 NM from coastal towns Zadar and Sibenik, and 7 NM from Murter.
You can get to Kornati islands by boats, organized or private boat excursions. You can rent a boat in many settlements on islands nearby Kornati islands or in many coastal towns.
Former cattlemen used to surround their pastures by drywalls which were high enough so that sheep can not jump over and enter another pasture.
Largest island is Kornat with surface of 32,44 km2. Island Kornat is up to 2,5 km wide and 25,2 km long. Kornati islands are the densest archipelago in Mediterranean. Highest peak is Metlina (237 m) on island Kornat.
Kornati islands have around 2700 sunny hours per year. Average temperature in February is 8°C and in July and August 25°C. Average year temperature is 16°C. Most rain falls in October. Most often wind is bora and strongest is scirocco. During the summer there is also wind mistral.
Kornati islands were made at the end of ice age when sea raised so much that covered pastures and made islands out of top of the hills. Many remains from Antique times used to be at or above the sea level 2000 years ago: saltwork in Sipnate, port devices in Vela Proversa, docks in Piskera and Sipnate.
From Neolithic era was found stone ax in field Zeljkovica on island Kornat.
First inhabitants of Kornati islands were Illyrian tribe Liburnians.
Romans built villa rusticae and fish pool.
In 6th century on island Kornat were built fort Tureta and Church of St. Mary.
Fort Tureta was built for army to control secure sailing in Kornati area.
Church of Our Lady of Tarac has dimensions 20m x 13m. Preserved remains are apse and part of foundation. On first Sunday in July in the church is kept service to bless the plain and the sea.
There are not many documents about life on Kornati islands.
In 19th century Zadar's nobility had to sell Kornati islands because they couldn't pay for taxes any more. In 1885. Murter bought island Zut and in 1896. island Kornat and other islands.
NATIONAL PARK KORNATI
In 1980. Kornati islands were declared as national park. National park Kornati has surface of 220 km2 and includes 89 islands, islets and cliffs. ¼ of total park's surface is land, the rest is marine ecosystem. Land part of park is in private ownership.
Most famous part of National park Kornati are vertical cliffs called krune (crowns). The crowns were created by tectonic faults by which part of islands broke off and disappeared under the sea, and erosion processes under the influence of sea currents and wind formed vertical cliffs which protect islands from open sea. Lenght of all crowns is around 7 km. In the area of crowns live many bird species and grow rare plants.
Until today in National park Kornati were found and listed 537 plant species on land, 226 species of benthic algae and around 850 living organisms in the sea. The most famous is the monk seal. It is believed that much more organisms and plant species will be found.
Underwater life is consisted of algae, marine flowering plants, corals, molluscs, fishes, echinoderms, crabs, ploychaete... Seagrass Posidonia makes oxygen in the sea.
Part of Kornati's flora are pine woods, knapweed, plantain, spurge, pastures, iris, orchids, narcissus...
There are no large animals on Kornati islands, but there are many other attractive ones like bats, owls, seagulls... Most often dolphin species is good dolphin. There are also sea turtles.

Oldest rocks on Kornati islands are limestone and dolomite.
National park Kornati has few catering objects and control service. There are around 20 taverns and restaurants on Kornati islands where you can try some delicious Dalmatian specialties.
Areas around island Purara and cliffs Mala Purara and Volic have been declared as areas of special protection, so visitors are allowed to any areas of park except those. In these areas scientists still explore life on islands and in sea.
Accommodation in National park Kornati is offered by tourist agencies and private owners. Additional services like rent a boat are also offered.
In National park Kornati are also decorated hiking paths which lead to lookout points where from you can enjoy in beautiful view on entire Kornati islands.
In August of 2007. a tragedy happened on Kornati islands and 12 firemen died.

For cruising in area of National park Kornati you must have a ticket. Swimming is allowed without any license.
You don't need any license for snorkeling, but diving visit has to be in approved groups. It is not allowed to remove anything from the sea. Endangering of animals is also not allowed.
Camping is allowed only in camping areas which have contract with NP Kornati.
Anchoring and overnight on board is allowed in 18 specific bays: Statival, Sipnate, Anica, Kravjacica, Striznja, Lucica, Opat, Gujak, Lavsa, Tomasovac-Suha Punta, Podbizanj, Stiniva, Lupeska, Smokica, Vruje, Ravni Zakan, Piskera-Vela Panitula, Koromasna.
Closest ambulance is on island Murter and closest hospital in town Sibenik on mainland.
