Nature park Kopacki Rit is located in region Baranja, on north-east side of Croatia. Kopacki Rit is situated between rivers Drava and Dunav. It is part of Municipality Bilje.
You can get to Nature park Kopacki Rit by car, bus, plane. Airport Osijek is located within state road Osijek-Vukovar, 20 km far from town Osijek. You can take a bus for town Osijek and then for Bilje in Baranja.
If you are coming by car from western Croatia, you can take a highway A3 Zagreb-Osijek. From Osijek you should follow signs for Bilje and then for Kopacevo for Nature park Kopacki Rit. Or you can follow signs from Osijek for Nature park Kopacki Rit.
Nature park Kopacki Rit was established in 1976. It is the oldest nature park in Croatia. It was named after Hungarian words „kapocs“ which means buckle (Croatian kopca) and „ret“ which means wetland meadow. Nature park Kopacki Rit is nominated for UNESCO list and it is losted on IBA (ornithological important areas).
Nature park Kopacki Rit has surface of 177 km2 (17 000 ha). Kopacki Rit is largest nursery and hatchery of freshwater fish in Danube region, with over 140 nesting bird species nesting each year.
Waters and land of Kopacki Rit make beautiful mosaic. Rivers make islands, inlets, lakes and ponds.
Two largest lakes are Kopacko and Sakadas. Lake Kopacko has surface of 220 ha and it is 1,5-5 m deep. Lake Sakadas is 7 m deep what makes it deepest lake in the park.
Longest canal is Stara Barbara. It is 26,7 km long. Canal that connects river Dunav and Kopacki Rit is called Hulovski Canal and it is 6 km long and 34 m wide. Canal that connects river Drava and Kopacki Rit is called Renovo Canal and it is 3 km long and 20 m wide.
Nature park Kopacki Rit has rich animal and plant life.
Vegetation is very diverse. Most of the area is covered with white willow forest. On higher terrains are white willow and poplar forests. On even higher terrains are oak forests. Swamp vegetation includes: duckweed, water lily, reeds, tall sedges... Other plant life in Nature park Kopacki Rit: colorful irises, lilies, azole, black sedge, reed...
Kopacki Rit is ideal for different animal life. You can see shellfish, carp, pike, perch, catfish, common deer, wild cat, badgers, 285 bird species, snails, stagbeetle, horseflies, gleams, wild boar, European beaver, European otter, marten... Most known bird species: herons, gulls, whiskered tern, cormorants, eagles, black storks, falcons, white egret, wild geese, ferruginous ducks...
In settlement Tikves is a castle from 19th century and hunting country villa which were used by president Josip Broz Tito and king Alexander. If you announce your arrival, you will get a professional guide.
There are organized bus excursions to Nature park Kopacki Rit. You can visit park with a boat, you can go canoeing. There are organized programs for different kinds of visiting: canoeing, boat riding, photo safari, birdwatching...
In Nature park Kopacki Rit you can also rent a bike. You can also get a license for recreational fishing. You can get a day or year license.
In Nature park Kopacki Rit you can adopt a bird. Price depends on bird species. Bird gets a ring with number and a name which you choose.
Naturalist Szecheny made the idea of Belje's national park in 1935.
In 1967. Kopacki Rit became Managed Nature Reserve.
In 1976. immediate area of park became Special zoological reserve and wider area became Nature park Kopacki Rit.
In 1993. Nature park Kopacki Rit becate protected as internationally significant wetlands. It was protected by Ramsar Convention.
Since 1997. park is managed by public institution Nature park Kopacki Rit.
It was many times questioned if Kopacki Rit should be national park.
During the Homeland war parts of park were mined.
