Airport Zagreb is largest airport in Croatia. It is called Pleso and it is located next to town Velika Gorica, town located south-east of Zagreb. Airport Zagreb was renovated again and cargo terminal, customs offices, international forwarding and new fire station were built. Also, passenger building has 11 000 m2. In 1986. platform was increased for additional 30 000 m2.

Karlovac is a town in Central Croatia, located 53 km south-east of Zagreb and 59 km far from Airport Zagreb. It is located on crossroad of main road and train routes from Zagreb to Split and Rijeka. It is situated on 4 rivers (Kupa, Korana, Mreznica and Dobra). Karlovac is consisted of 53 settlements. Karlovac has around 60 000 inhabitants. Karlovac was founded on 13th of July in 1579. as fort for defense during the Turkish attacks. One part od Michael Jackson's spot for Earth Song was filmed in Karlovac in 1995.
There are around 50 locations with findings of Stone Age people living in area of Croatia. Most important finding is located near Krapina, on Husnjak hill. Dragutin Gorjanovic Kramberger found remains of Neanderthal man in 1899. It is believed Neanderthal men lived here around 130 000 years BC.
There are four different cultures formed according to locations of findings: Starcevacka, Sopotska, Danilska and Hvarska culture.
Starcevacka culture was in northern Croatia. Sopotska culture was in area of today's region Slavonia. Danilska culture was along the Adriatic coast. Hvarska culture was within southern Adriatic islands.
In area of Srijem and Slavonia was Vucedol culture which is famous for finding of a dish in a shape of a bird which is called Vucedol dove.
During the Bronze Age were also cultures of Vinkovci and Cetina.
During the Iron Age in area of Croatia lived first known tribes.
Celtic nations lived in area north of rivers Kupa and Sava in 4th century BC. They brought mintage to this area.
Illyrian nations lived in area south of river Sava and they built stone forts. Liburnians were Illyrian tribe who were known for shipbuilding.
GREEKS, ILLYRIANS AND ROMANS
Greeks lived in Croatian areas in 4th century BC. First settlements were on island Korcula and island Vis.
Illyrians were pirating what led them to war with Romans. Romans established two provinces Dalmatia and Panonia. Oldest Dalmatian colonies were Salona, Narona, Pola and Jadera. Oldest Panonian colonies were Sirmij and Siscija. Most important monuments from Roman times are Pula's amphitheater Arena and Diocletian's palace in Split.
ARRIVAL OF CROATS AND MEDIEVAL CROATIA
Croats came to this area in 7th century. At arrival Croats believed in many gods and later accepted Christianity.
First ruler of Croatian small states was Trpimir who called himself "duke of Croats by Grace of God“ in 852.
In 879. duke Branimir informed pope John VIII about his rule which pope accepted.
First Croatian king was Tomislav in 925. Tomislav merged north and south Croatia into one state.
First Croatian crowned king was Stjepan Drzislav.
King Peter Kresimir IV ruled from 1058. till 1074. and merged other parts to Croatian state: Dalmatian towns, Slavonia and Neretva.
Dmitar Zvonimir was king from 1075. till 1089. During his rulership was written first document on Croatian Glagolitic language – Bascanska board.
In 1102. Croats chose Hungarian king Koloman Arpadovic for their king. Personal union of Croatia and Hungary lasted until 1918.
In 1094. was founded Diocese in Zagreb.
Venice wanted to occupy Croatian coast for many years.
In 1222. king Andrew II convenes Parliament and brings Golden Bulla which enhances power of royalty. Most important and most known families were Frankopans and Subics. Many free royal towns were founded after Vinodol Zakonik was brought in 1288. Vinodol Zakonik was first law book written in Croatian language.
In 1358. Venice gave up all Damatian areas. Dubrovnik accepted Croatian-Hungarian rulers and became Republic. In 1409. Venice got Dalmatia again when Ladislav of Naples sold Dalmatia for 100 000 pieces of ducats.
Defence camps of Croatia, Slavonia and Usor were not successful during the attacks of Turks. In 1463. Matija Korvin founded Srebrenica and Jajce duchies in Bosnia.
In 1493. Turks defeated Croatian army at Krbavsko field. One of the most significant Croatian generals was Krsto Frankapan. In 1526. Ottoman Sultan Suleiman defeated Croatian-Hungarian state in Mohacs field.
Ferdinand of Habsburg was chosen as Croatian king in 1527.
Nikola Jurisic defeated Ottoman army at Kiseg and saved Vienna. In 1566. sultan Suleiman the Magnificent attacked Vienna at Siget when died one of the greatest men in Croatian history – Nikola Subic Zrinski. In 1593. was battle at Sisak when Turks were defeated. Most important was fort Karlovac.
Nikola Zrinski burned a bridge in Osijek to stop Turks to occupy Europe. Turks implemented islamization in occupied area but also accept Christian religion of some people, mostly Orthodox.
Hajduks and Uskoks were resisting Turks. Dubrovnik Republic was the only independent part of Croatia which had over 200 navy ships.
In 1683. Turks were defeated near Vienna. In 1699. a lot of Croatian areas were freed from Turkish authority.
First modern government was founded in 1767. Hungary wanted to make great state from Carpathians to Adriatic sea with official Hungarian language.
In 1805. Croatia is under the rule of France. In 1815. Istria and Dalmatia were under Austrian authority.
CROATIAN NATIONAL REVIVAL
Main goal in 19th century was to merge all Croatian areas and parts in which helped Zagreb's bishop Maksimilijan Vrhovac.
Ljudevit Gaj founded Illyrian Movement for cultural revival of Croatia. In 19th century were published newspapers of Croatia, was issued song Horvatska Domovina (Croatian Fatherland) which was later Croatian national anthem, was founded cultural institution Matica Ilirska, Croatian language became official in Croatia and Croatian Parliament.
First Croatian ban was Josip Jelacic, from 1848. till 1859. He was in war with Hungary and abolished serfdom in Croatia in 1848. He also convened elections for Croatian Parliament. First political parties were People's Party, Unionist Party and Party of Rights.
From 1883. until 1903. ban Khuen-Hedervary conducted Hungarization.
After World War I Croatia became part of Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes which was named Kingdom Yugoslavia in 1929. Italian authorty was in Rijeka, Istria and Zadar.
During World War II Croatian parts were under different authorities. Islands, Istria and parts of Dalmatia under Italy, Medimurje in northern Croatia under Hungary. Croatia was independent state from 1941. till 1945.
While Croatia was again part of socialist Yugoslavia, cultural and political movement Croatian Spring was founded so Josip Broz Tito dismissed Croatian political leadership. Tito died in 1980. New leader became Slobodan Milosevic.
In 1990. on Croatian Parliament elections won Franjo Tudman and his party HDZ (Croatian Democratic Party). New name of Croatia was Republic of Croatia. On 19th of May 1991. on independence referendum 93,24% of inhabitants voted for independence. On 25th of June 1991. Croatian Parliament declared Croatian independence and on 8th of October all connections with Yugoslavia were abolished. First Croatian president was Franjo Tudman.
All of that led to Homeland War which ended in 1995. Homeland War was consisted of three main phases. First was attack of Serbian army in 1991. Second phase was from 1991. till 1995. which was mostly consisted of diplomatic negotiations and arrival of UN. Third phase was consisted of liberation operations Oluja and Bljesak. The war ended with over 21000 dead people on both sides and over 550 000 refugees. 26% of Croatian teritory was occupied.
On 22nd of May 1992. Croatia was accepted to United Nations.
In 2000. Croatian president became Stjepan Mesic. In 2010. new president became Ivo Josipovic.
On 1st of April 2009. Croatia became part of NATO and on 1st of July 2013. part of European Union.
In 2015. Croatia got its first female president Kolinda Grabar Kitarovic.

Politics• POLITICAL STRUCTURE: Croatia is republic by its state regulation with a democratically elected parliament. Croatia political system is like most countries in Western & Central Europe.
• PRESIDENT: The President of the Republic of Croatia is Head of State. President is responsible for the defense of territorial integrity and independence of the state. President is supreme commander of the armed forces of Republic of Croatia. President of Croatia is elected for term of 5 years and can only be chosen twice in lifetime. Current president of Croatia is Ivo Josipović (since 2010.).
• LEGISLATIVE: Croatian Parliament is representative of citizens. It can be consisted of 100-160 spokesmen or spokeswomen elected for a term of 4 years. Public sessions are kept in two periods of a year. Croatian Parliament legislates and supervises work of the Government.
• GOVERNMENT: Croatian Government brings and implements laws, proposes state budget, leads foreign and domestic politics, is responsible for economic development of state... Government is consisted of president, one or more vice presidents and ministers. Current president of Croatian Government is Zoran Milanovic.
• JUDICIARY: Croatian judicial authorities are magistrates court, county courts, municipal courts, High Magistrated Court, commercial courts, High Commercial Court, Administrative Court and Supreme Court. Supreme Court is highest court in the state. Judges are elected for term of 8 years.
• FEDERAL CONSTITUTIONAL COURT: Federal Constitutional Court decides on the constitutionality of laws. It is consisted of 13 judges.
• STATE ATTORNEY: State Attorney of Republic of Croatia is independent judicial body that protects Constitution of Republic of Croatia and Croatian assets.
First public transportation vehicle in Croatia was horse omnibus established in 1844. in Zagreb.
Horse tram was used first in Osijek in 1884. and in Zagreb in 1891.
Zagreb also has funicular which connects Upper and Lower town which was built in 1890. Rail is 66 m long which makes it shortest public funicular railroad in the world.
First electrical trams were used in Rijeka, Pula, Opatija and Dubrovnik. Electrical tram in Zagreb was used from 1910. and in Osijek from 1926. Trams have been used since 1970. only in towns Zagreb and Osijek.
First public buses were used in Osijek in 1913. Trolleybuses were used in Rijeka and Split for short time.
First taxi vehicle in town Zagreb came on 11th of June 1901.
Many inhabitants of settlements and towns near Zagreb use local train lines to get to work and to schools. Most active line is Savski Marof-Zagreb-Dugo Selo started in 1992.
Traffic & Highways
Croatia has developed railroads, air traffic, maritime traffic and highways.
Croatia has railroads connecting Zagreb with north, west, east and south Croatia. State railway company is Croatian Railways. Croatian Railways were founded in 1990.
Town Rijeka is largest Croatian port. Other main ports are Split, Dubrovnik, Zadar and Ploce. Largest national boat operator is Jadrolinija.
Croatia has 7 international airports: Zagreb, Osijek, Split, Rijeka, Dubrovnik, Pula and Zadar. National airline is Croatia Airlines. Croatia also has 11 smaller airports: Brac, Osijek-Cepin, Vrsar, Cakovec, Varazdin, Grobnik, Sinj, Lucko, Losinj, Ploce and Otocac.
Croatia has over 1400 km of highways. All highways connect capital city Zagreb with other parts of Croatia. First Croatian highway was Orehovica-Kikovica opened in 1971.
Highways still in construction are Split-Dubrovnik, Zagreb-Sisak, Vrbovec-Koprivnica, Vrbovec-Virovitica.
